3.2 Materials. Materials shall be as specified herein, on applicable specifications, and on
applicable drawings. Materials not specifically designated shall be suitable for use in the control
and flasher units operating over an ambient temperature range from -65 to 160 degree Fahrenheit
(F) without any change in physical or dimensional properties that would result in operation of
the units falling outside of the limits specified herein. Asbestos, cadmium, hexavalent
chromium, and radioactive material shall not be used in this item. Radioactive material is
defined by Code of Federal Regulations, Title 10, Part 40, and as other radioactive material in
which the radioactivity is greater than 0.002 microcuries per gram or 0.01 microcuries total
activity for the item.
3.2.1 Potting compound. Potting compound, when used, shall be non-hygroscopic, shall
comply with shock and vibration requirements specified herein, and shall not support fungus
growth.
3.2.2 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled,
recovered, or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent
possible provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance
requirements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs.
3.3 Design and construction. The control and flasher covered by this specification shall
conform to the interface, volumetric, and mounting requirements of Drawings 11613632 and
11613631, respectively. This signal light control shall comply with all applicable Department of
Transportation requirements found in part 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (see 4.4).
3.3.1 Dissimilar metals. Except where necessary to complete an electrical circuit,
contact between dissimilar metals which would encourage galvanic action shall be avoided.
3.3.2 Standard parts. Military standard parts shall be used wherever possible, if repair
parts are called out for the control and flasher.
3.3.3 Threaded parts. All screw threads shall conform to ASME B1.1.
3.3.4 Flash indicator lamp. The flash indicator lamp for the control unit shall conform to
A-A-50588. The lamp indicator light opening shall be located as shown on Drawing 11613632.
Luminescence from the lamp opening shall be a green color without glare that would blind the
driver. Emitting surface shall have a minimum area equivalent to a 0.19 inches (in.) diameter
circle.
3.3.4.1 Flash indicator lamp replacement. Replacement of the flash indicator lamp for
the control unit shall be capable of being accomplished without removing the control unit from
the steering column. Access for replacement shall be accomplished by removing the lens or by
loosening the captive retaining devices permitting movement of a captive subassembly of the
control unit. All components exposed during replacement of the bulb shall be captive (including
seals). When the lens assembly or the captive subassembly of the control unit is located on the
